Description : Brailsford garage, Bold Lane, Derby Image Reference No. : DP-OLDJILSHAR-01 Original photo supplied to me by : Jill Sharpe Approx Date of photo : Mid/late 1960's This photo was taken at the Cheapside end of Bold Lane and shows Brailsford Garage which has a rather distinctive item adorning it's roof. In 1963, this 150 year old coach, with V.R. on the axles, came from Radbourne Hall where it had been outside in the elements decaying for 15 years because the stable had been damaged and it probably would have been scrapped. Mr Allsop of Allsop Garage (forerunner of Brailsford garage perhaps?) got the idea of putting it on his roof when he saw a French garage with a car exhibited on its roof. When it was acquired it had no colour left, but Mr Allsop had it painted crimson and yellow. There is no indication as to what happened to it later or where it is today. I would like to thank Paul Hudson of Derby Local Studies Library for this information. Update : It is now at red House Stable at Darley Dale and has been fully restored. I believe that is is still owned by the Chandos Pole family from Radbourne Hall. It is probably the most complete example of a Mail Coach in existence and dates from about the 1800's. I would like to thank Gordon Hardy of the Midland Postal History Group for this additional info on the coach. |
