Bertram Mills’ Circus was extreamly popular in the 1930s and 1940s.When Bertram Mills retired, his sons continued to develop his circus, bringing new acts from across Europe and America. They also continued to tour Bertram Mills’ Circus across the UK.

Elephants : Manjoulah, Lechmey, Patho, Kathol, Hungoly & Jenny came to Bertram Mills' Circus as youngsters. Their ages ranged from two to six years old and some stayed with the circus for over 20 years.

Other Information : This shows the junction of Cotton Lane with Osmaston Rd. The cake shop on this corner sold Birds Cakes until 1962 then was a bookmakers owned by George Siddal, then by his son until 1970 when it was demolished.
The cafe behind me on the corner was a small confectioners /tobacconists in 1947 which my dad owned.
The building on the right side of Osmaston road was Carriage & Wagon works canteen.
In 1970's the streets of Graham street, Gilman street and Russel street were demolished. They have remained as parkland since then.

Other Information : This rare photo shows the former Kennings garage which used to be located on the corner of Alexandra street and Osmaston road.
The quality of this image is not very good as it is from a copy.

The Orangery seen on the left, still remains today.

Other Information : This was the view from the top of Derby Cathedral looking towards the Council house. The original Assembly rooms (demolished 1972) can be seen in this photo !
Post-war shortage of building materials delayed the completion of the Council House until 1954.

Derby's old Power Station which was built in 1921. It was demolished in the early 1970's.To the left of Silk Mill Lane is the original 1893 section of the power Station.In the distance the mass of sidings forming the London Midland and Scottish Railway's St Mary's goods depot are visible.
