The Olympic Torch is coming to Darley Park on Friday 29th June 2012!
I have created a detailed virtual reality tour of Darley Park to celebrate this fact. <- Click for more information on this.

Darley Park is one of the City's most popular parks, located in Darley Abbey next to the river Derwent.
The park is the venue for an extremely popular free classical concert held in late summer, see photos of such a concert HERE keep an eye on my blog at the end of August for details on this years Darley Park Concert.

The park is home to a national collection of viburnum and hydrangea which was started in 1984.
The purpose of this collection is to save plants which are in danger of extinction.

The location of the park was once home to the county’s most important monastic institution: a house of Augustinian Canons established in 1137 and dedicated to St Helena.

Over the centuries the land passed through many hands, reaching local mill owners the Evans family by the early nineteenth century.

Twenty acres of these gardens were donated to the former Derby Corporation in 1922, and during the next decade further additions of land were made so that the park consisted of approximately eighty acres by the time it was opened in June 1931.

Darley Park was officially opened in June 1931 by the Duke of Kent. Included with the park was a red brick Georgian mansion,
this had to be demolished in the early 1960s as it became too dangerous. The site was landscaped into a terraced garden area as you can see in the photos below.
