Then and now photographs of Derby and Derbyshire.

"A truly unique way to see changes in time using two perfectly lined up images, one old & one new."
High quality and resolution interactive fading photos showing local scenes as they were and how they are today from exactly the same view point.
Then and now, Now and then, Past and Present, Old and New, Before and After. Call it what you want, just try one and see the effect!.
To view a presentation just click on a thumbnail photo below, (the thumbnail image shows the image as it is today.) Once you click on one, it will open a new window and the presentation data will be loaded, this should not take more than a minute or so on dial-up modem or just a few seconds on Broadband. Once it has loaded it should auto-play, The fading will repeat back and forth forever. You can pause the fade at any time using the Pause button. Just click the Play button to restart the fading. To quit the presentation just click the red X Quit button or close the window.
For more info read see the main then and now index.

These are interactive fading images presented using Adobe Flash, You must have a screen resolution of 1024x768 (or greater) to view these presentations, I have designed them so that they use as much of the browser viewing window as possible. A reasonable specification PC is required (850MHz+) otherwise the image fading will be extremely slow. If you enjoy watching these presentations then please leave some comments for my guest book by using the link at the top/right of this window.

This page is just one of many sets of then and now photographs, to see others visit the index by clicking on the Then and now Home button at the top of this page or use the Previous and Next links below to see the previous and next set of five fading images.

Photo Description : Market Place, Derby
Image Reference No. : DP-TAN-MARKPL1-121
Details : This is a view of a Derby's Market Place. This took two attempts to get right as I did not realise that the war memorial had been moved since photo A was taken. The memorial was designed by C A Thompson and was built in the Market Place in 1924 by A G Walker.
The rounded building at the bottom of Iron Gate was built for Barlow and Taylor's department store, this building was for many years The Derbyshire Building Society until it was closed in May 2004, half of the building was converted into a bookmakers and the remaining part was converted into Nando's, which opened August 2005. Currently (June 2006) plans are being applied for to create 12 luxury apartments in the upper floors.
The building on the corner of Iron Gate and Sadler Gate (Lloyds Bank) was built in 1700 and was once the home of William Bemrose of Bemrose Stationers and printers. He set up business here in 1827.

Photo Description : Holy Trinity church view, London Road, Derby
Image Reference No. : DP-TAN-LONROATRIN-122
Details : This is a view looking towards the City Centre of Holy Trinity Church (Assemblies of the First Born Church) on London Road, The DRI is on the left side of the photo. Holy Trinity Church was consecrated in 1836, rebuilt in 1903 originally this church was called St Georges. Winter is the only time I could take my photo as I needed to see the pinicles of the church to get a match, You can just about see them through the branches of the tree.
Notice how the branch structure of the tree on the corner of Trinity Street has not really changed in 100 years!, It confirms that its the very same tree.

Photo Description : Cavendish, Derby
Image Reference No. : DP-TAN-CAVDISBIRDS-123
Details : This is a view of the junction where Upper Dale Road (centre/right of photo), Almond Street (centre/left of photo), Stenson Road (far left side of photo), Walbrook Road (far right side of photo) and Derby Lane (where photo was taken from) all meet up in an area known locally as The Cavendish (part of the suburb of Normanton), which is just north west of the Pear Tree area of Derby.
In the centre of Photo A is Birds Confectioners Ltd, a local firm famous for their freshly baked cakes. Their slogan was "we never sell a stale cake" The company was founded by Reg, Frank and Tom Bird at the former Peach's bakery building at the end of Upper Dale Road in 1919. They have over 40 shops in the Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire area. The bakery on Upper Dale road was eventually demolished and replaced with a petrol station and garage and Birds opened a new large bakery on Ascot Drive. There is still a Birds shop in the Cavendish just a stones throw away from the original location at 139 Walbrook Road. Rather strangely Birds do not seem to have a website so I can't provide a link to it.
On the left side of both photos you can see the right part of a two-storied semi-circular building, this was built in 1910 by the Derby Co-Operative Provident Society, on the top floor of the building was Jubilee Hall, named to commemorate the Diamond Jubilee of the Co-Op Society. The shops that now reside in this building are Spec-savers and Discount 2000.

On the right side of both photos is the Cavendish hotel, built in 1898. Today this road junction is a busy thoroughfare for people gaining access to the outer ring road and nothing like the tranquil view in Photo A.
In photo A you can see a Tram waiting outside the Birds show, the Walbrook Road tramway extension was opened on Tuesday 5th of September 1905, enabling a new circular service to operate via Normanton Road to Pear Tree and back to Victoria Street via Osmaston Road.

I have scanned in a Birds Cake box logo so you can see what it looks like.
