If you used to live in Derby a LONG time ago you may be confused by this photo, Yes it is an Indian temple, Normaton has a very strong Asian community and this is one of many temples that have been built in the Normanton area.
This photo was taken a week after the Vaisakhi celebrations, this is why the temple is decorated.

• Photos of Normaton Park, Derby, Derbyshire, England
Normanton Park was opened on 4th September 1909 by the Duke of Devonshire, It had 30 acres and a pavilion designed by John Ward.

I remember seeing Derby's fireworks and bonfire displays here in the late 70's and learning to ride my bike back in the long hot summer of 1979. You don't get summers as hot as they used to be and it does not snow like it used to either. Remember the long school summer holidays watching Why don't you, Bagpus and the Waltons......

Photo Description : The Blue Pool pub
Exact map location : Click HERE
Date photo taken : 13th July 2001
Other Information : The Blue Pool was built in 1936 and was opened on 13th May of that year.
It was the third pub of identical design to be opened in Derby. The
others being The Blue Peter at Alvaston, opened Jan 1935 and The Blue Boy at Chaddeston opened Jan 1936. They were all opened by Offilers, the Derby brewer. (Now part of Bass) The pubs were designed by Messrs Browning and Hayes - architects of Irongate Derby and built by W. Ford & son. The license for the Blue Pool was transferred from The Mazeppa Inn which was demolished to make way for the new bus station in the Morledge.

The Blue Pool consisted of several rooms - including one decorated
in Chinese style. The smoke room was panelled in Queensland and French Walnut. (Incidentally, each panel consisted of 4 smaller pannels all cut from the same tree and arranged so that the grain resembled the torso of the human body.)
Unfortunately the panelling and a wonderful carved fireplace were ripped out when the pub was refurbished not long ago in the name of so called progress.

It was originally intended to build a swimming pool (hence the name) at the back of the pub complete with diving boards, a solarium and a cafe. Unfortunately this never got started and the idea got scrapped altogether when the war broke out.
