• Photos of Mackworth, Derby, Derbyshire, England.
The suburb of Mackworth lies off the busy A52 Derby to Ashbourne road and has little connection with the village which bears the same name on the opposite side of the A52.
Samuel Richardson, known as 'the Father of the English Novel' was born here in 1689.

Photo Description : Mackworth Castle
Date photo taken : 12th October 2001
Other Information : Apparently there never was a Mackworth Castle, only a gate house in a castle style which was to have been the lodge to Mackworth Hall. The De Mackworths built the lodge/gate house then dropped plans to build the hall and moved off to build a hall on some new land they had acquired.

Cromwell, Cannon Hill and the destruction of the castle by the Roundheads, is all legendary nonsense.

Other notable families in the area were the Touchets and the Mundys, who lived over at the now demolished Markeaton Hall.

Photo Description : Mackworth Water Tower
Date photo taken : 12th October 2001
Other Information : Water pumping building.
I think that water is pumped upto the reservoir at the back of this building (underground) and from there it is pumped upto the top of the water tower, this gives the correct water pressure required/

The following images are scanned from normal photographs, which I took on November 10th 1991 when my mum did a sponsored abseil down Mackworth Water Tower for charity, despite being scarred of heights!
