Photo Description : Zanzibar club on London road.
Date photo taken : 15th June 2001
Other Information : This building was built in 1934 as the Gaumont Palace cinema. It then changed its name to the Odeon cinema and then the Canon Cinema, which had three screens. I remember watching ET here!
It is now the home of the Zanzibar nightclub.

Photo Description : Main Centre in town, No longer exisits !

Other Information : This is a photo of the Main Centre looking from the bottom entrance. On the right side is Argos and Wilkinson's. On the left side is Reveal records, Amazing, Staybrite, Camera shop etc.
The site of the main centre was once occupied by one of Derby's main employers - Castlefield's Mill, otherwise known as Boden's lace factory, built in 1821 and was run by the Boden family.

UPDATE:
The shops on the right closed summer 2004 and were demolished to make way for the new Westfield Derby shopping centre.

Photo Description : Baroque pub on London road

Other Information : This pub built in 1982 used to be called The Coliseum until 2000 when it changed to Baroque. This location used to be the site of Bradleys corner the popular gents outfitter. This site was formerly occupied by a large mid 19th century chapel, which later became the Coliseum Cinema in the 1930's. This corner was cleared in the 1960's to make way for the Main Centre.

UPDATE:
This pub closed in May 2004 and was demolished to make way for the new Westfield Derby shopping centre.

Photo Description : Strutts pub on London road

Other Information : This pub was built in 1937 when it replaced the original pub that was built in 1833. This pub has changed its name over time it has been called The Royal Telegraph, The Telegraph and Trinian's.

Photo Description : Liversage Almshouses on London road

Other Information : The Liversage's Almshouses were built in 1863 out of the Liversage estate at a cost of £3000. The charity, left by Robert Liversage in the year 1529, was at the time of small value, but by 1888 amounted to £2600 yearly consisted of land and house property in and near Derby. Robert Liversage was a wealthy tradesman who lived in the parish of St Peter's in the reign of Henry VIII.

Photo Description : Statue of Florence Nightingale on London road

Other Information : This statue resides on London road in front of The Derby Royal Infirmary. It is by Countess Feodora Gleichen who was related to Queen Victoria and was the first member of the Royal Society of British Sculptors. This is a Grade II listed statue.
Her statue was unveiled by the Duke of Devonshire in 1924.

Photo Description : The Derby ram statue in the Main Centre

Other Information : This is a bronze statue of the Derby Ram which is located in the Main Centre shopping area, It was erected in 1963.
Update April 2006 - This statue was moved to the grass area at the back of the council house (river gardens) while the new Eagle Centre is built.
